Donaldson Park Installs Bat Boxes To Address Mosquito Concerns

Posted

Two new bat boxes have been installed at Donaldson Park today, marking a community-wide effort to naturally manage the mosquito population. The initiative, which has garnered support from various local and state organizations, aims to introduce a sustainable method for insect control while also benefiting local bat populations.

Each of the newly installed "rocket boxes" is designed to house over 300 bats. Proponents of the project highlight that bats are voracious insect eaters, capable of consuming up to six times their body weight in insects nightly. This natural predation is anticipated to significantly reduce mosquito numbers in the park and surrounding areas.

The project is the result of collaborative efforts and shared knowledge from several key contributors. Desmaray from the US Army Corps of Engineers and Mallory Tate from the TWRA provided guidance, while Mat Craghead and the Clay County High School Ag students contributed to the practical implementation. Local businesses Celina Lumber Company and Clay County Farm Supply also offered support. Individuals including Robert Thurman, Rocky Thurman, and Joseph Short were involved, alongside assistance from PAJCH Homeschoolers INC., TN Dept of Agriculture Museum staff, and City of Celina Mayor Luke Collins.

Organizers expressed optimism that the project will lead to a healthier balance in the insect population. There are hopes that if successful, more bat boxes could be installed across the city in the future, further aiding in mosquito control and supporting endangered bat species.

The bat boxes will be monitored weekly, with updates on their effectiveness and bat occupancy to be provided as the project progresses.
